Most perceived motion blur on modern flat panels is caused by sample-and-hold display mechanics. When a static frame is displayed for a full refresh cycle (e.g. 16.67ms at 60Hz), your eyes continuously track moving objects across the screen, smearing the static frame across your retina.
How do high refresh rates reduce motion blur?
At 144Hz, frames are held for only 6.94ms; at 240Hz, just 4.17ms. Shorter frame persistence reduces retinal tracking smear, resulting in substantially sharper moving images.
