Visual Gamma Calibration Protocol

  1. Click Fullscreen and sit back at your normal viewing distance (about 2–3 feet from the screen).
  2. Slightly squint or defocus your eyes so the background black and white scanlines blend into a uniform solid gray field.
  3. Observe which labeled box (1.8, 2.0, 2.2, 2.4, 2.6) matches the brightness of the blended background.
  4. If the 2.2 (Target) box blends seamlessly into the striped background, your display is well-calibrated for standard web and gaming content.

What is display gamma (Gamma 2.2)?

Display gamma defines the mathematical non-linear curve connecting input digital RGB values to output optical luminance. Standard digital content for sRGB and Rec.709 is mastered targetting a 2.2 gamma power curve.

How does the visual gamma pattern work?

The background consists of alternating 1-pixel black and white scanlines which optically produce 50% physical luminance. When viewed from a slight distance or with relaxed eyes, the solid gray swatch that blends seamlessly into the background indicates your monitor active gamma.

What if my monitor matches Gamma 1.8 or Gamma 2.6 instead of 2.2?

A lower gamma (e.g. 1.8) results in a washed-out, overly bright image with low contrast. A higher gamma (e.g. 2.6) makes images overly dark and crushes shadow detail. Use your monitor OSD Gamma setting or GPU control panel to adjust closer to 2.2.
